In April 2013, a pharmaceutical company announced the launch of a vaccine that can supposedly treat obesity in dogs and cats. To some, this may have sounded like great news. A quick solution to a serious problem? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Like any vaccination, there can be risks associated with it. According to Healthy Pets, the vaccine is novel and contains an adjuvant. Adjuvants are added to vaccines to make them more effective. What they do is send an animal’s immune system into overdrive, and this can have a lasting negative effect on your pet’s health.

At Fur Fitness, we stress the importance of pets living a healthy lifestyle and their owners being wise about their nutrition. If your pet is overweight or obese – the only true correction is a lifestyle change. Your pet needs to be active at least 30 minutes per day. They need to be fed properly, with a watchful eye on portions.

Before you consider any changes that can affect the well-being of your pet, be sure to talk it over first with your veterinarian. They can offer sound advice on what’s best for your dog.
